Summerhaven, Mt. Lemmon — An Illustrated Map
A collaborative, art-meets-navigation map of Summerhaven that blends functional wayfinding with decorative storytelling. The piece highlights trails, landmarks, and local businesses while capturing the mountain’s character with vintage-style topography and a border of carefully selected flora and fauna—designed to serve both residents and the wider Mt. Lemmon community.
Research began by cataloging businesses, roads, and trails, then exploring style references to set the visual tone. Using ArcGIS 3D topography, I chose a vantage that nests Summerhaven among surrounding peaks and executed hillshade with cross-hatching for a classic feel. Roads and trails combine ArcGIS data with on-the-ground insights, trailheads are flagged, and key landmarks—like Ski Valley and Steward Observatory—are marked with illustrated medallions. A pop-out focuses on N. Sabino Canyon Parkway to clearly showcase the town center, and a small lemon icon nods to the mountain’s name.
The result is a map that orients hikers, skiers, and day-trippers while doubling as a keepsake. It hangs in Kim and Frank’s cabin and was prepared for community distribution through local gift shops ahead of the 2024 holiday season—an heirloom snapshot of place that conveys what satellite views can’t: memory, meaning, and the spirit of Summerhaven.
